How I became a career coach... (at 23)

I mostly coach clients online (especially at the moment), but I'm a strong believer that to build a relationship with somebody it helps to meet them face-to-face at least once.

Some of my clients have never seen my website, Instagram or other social media, and so they don't really know that much about me... what I do, why I do it, what I look like, what my personality is etc...

So before taking on new clients I always schedule a free discovery video-call!

This call creates a space to introduce ourselves and get to know each other a bit before we get into the details of the clients career situation and start exploring how we can work together to build the clients dream career.

It's usually at this point that clients might say something like 'I expected you to be much older' or (if they're feeling even bolder) 'how old are you?', and to be honest I used to get really disheartened with these comments.

Now, I take the opportunity to tell people how I became a career coach at 23...

I graduated from university in 2018.

I studied psychology because I was interested in learning about how the mind works - why we think and behave the way we do; and I wanted to to use this knowledge to help people to live happier lives (although I wasn't sure yet how I was going to do this).

By the end of my final year at university, I was feeling pretty exhausted with studying and sitting exams, so I decided to take a break from education and turned down a masters, joining a graduate scheme instead (spoiler - this was one of the best decisions I've ever made).

I started coaching and mentoring people at work.

I was thrown in at the deep end on my graduate scheme - soon after starting, I was given the responsibility of managing a whole team of people.

I knew about the benefits of coaching and mentoring for managing people, so I completed the CMI Level 5 Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring, and started coaching and mentoring people (and teams) at work. I loved it... and my clients were seeing real improvements!

In 2019, I founded Lets Talk About Work and I now coach and mentor graduates from different backgrounds and subject disciplines across the UK to start building their dream careers.
